LA SALLE FIRE STATION
LA SALLE, COLORADO
This project is a
new Fire Station, that expands and replaces the existing La Salle Fire
Station. The Owner's original intent was to construct an addition to
the existing fire station and increase its size from 4,000 square feet
to approximately 11,000 square feet. In meeting with the Fire District
Board and i nspecting
the existing facility, the program was revised to better integrate the
existing facility with the new spaces. Due to site limitations, a
desire to save portions of the existing facility, and to unify the look
of the building, the solution proposed was to construct a new building
shell over the existing facility. The new building would fill the entire
width of the 18,700 SF lot, provide the space required for the expanded
facility and make use of viable portions of the existing facility. The
existing structure was partially demolished and the remainder of the
existing facility remodeled and upgraded to ADA and Building Code
requirements. The resulting design provides a large four-bay open truck
area of approximately 5800 square feet that includes two drive-through
bays, an emergency response vehicle bay, a truck wash bay, an internally
integrated hose drying tower, a display room for an antique fire truck,
new offices and squad room, a training room, new toilet facilities, and
a remodeled kitchen. The design preserves the existing
meeting/trophy display room and
provides
for future living quarters on a second floor, which is the original roof
of the existing structure. The design also accommodates an existing
3000 square foot shop building at the rear of the site. Unique features
of the design include a windowed clerestory which allows for an internal
hose drying tower, brings light into the center of the facility and
future living quarters, and accommodates the truck bay ventilation
requirements without the need for roof penetrations.
